The Jungle Book
Film
VAD Art Director
Overview
Jon Favreau's Jungle Book was the first time he designed a film's sets and previs inside a game engine. I art directed the virtual art department, building out the real-time environment and lighting team, running weekly design sessions with the filmmakers - director Jon Favreau, PD Andrew Jones, DP Bill Pope, and VFX supervisor Rob Legato - and delegating notes to the crew. The sets lived in Unity and we reviewed them with the filmmakers each week. An early proof that real-time design could work, years before The Mandalorian.
Key Facts:
We designed all of the film's locations in Unity; 284 digital environments in all, in around 6 months. My team of 8 (five set artists for the PD, two lighting generalists for the DP, and an engineer) ran the asset libraries under Jungle Book Productions, before I moved to Digital Domain & MPC to carry the designs into VFX.
