Overview

In May 2026 I gave the inaugural VES Oregon Tech Talk, “Marrying Art & Virtual Production,” at Wieden+Kennedy in Portland. To a Laika-heavy room, my point was that real-time tools should serve the art, not the other way around: virtual production isn’t one LED wall, it’s using those tools wherever they help across film, TV, and animation, and most of it never touches a volume.

I walked through three case studies, the Star Wars Virtual Art Department, the reusable “LEGO set” on Why Women Kill, and The Labyrinth, an AI proof of concept with Safari. The Q&A kept circling one idea: the look comes from the artist and the technique, not the engine.
